SAWCA CLAIMS ADMINISTRATION COMMITTEE
MINUTES FROM THE ALL COMMITTEE CONFERENCE
NAPLES, FL
DECEMBER 4, 2008
Carl Reynolds, Sr. Vice President Workers’ Compensation Claims with Safety National opened the meeting with a presentation about workers’ compensation case reserving. This was a topic that was discussed by the committee at the meeting in DC and committee members had expressed interest in learning more about the subject. Carl covered Loss Reserving basics such as case reserves and IBNR reserves and the Case Reserving Process from A to Z, including the consequences of over and under-reserving. For those of you who unfortunately missed Carl’s presentation, a copy of his power point presentation and it will be available on the SAWCA website.
As a follow-up to Carl’s presentation, the attendees were provided examples of various companies reserve worksheets so that we could further review the process that the adjusters go through to set a reserve. Those will be emailed to all of the Claims Administration attendees from both DC and Naples.
In DC we discussed developing a Quick Reference Guide (QRG) to include all SAWCA states. The purpose of the guide is to provide the information that companies that operate in multiple states need to manage their workers’ compensation. A draft template was provided for the attendees to review. Everyone was asked to review and make suggestions regarding additional information that should be included. We will work on this more prior to the Convention in July, as well as in Sandestin.
Steve Taluskie from Kentucky provided the committee with copies of Kentucky’s Self-Insured Reserve Audit Program. Kentucky performs reserve audits on each self-insured employer to help determine the required surety amount for each self-insured employer pursuant to state regulation. The program includes pre-audit procedures, pre-audit questionnaire and a rating system.
There are many values related to membership in SAWCA but one of the best values is the information that can be gleaned from other states in the South. We are all faced with the same questions and problems and SAWCA provides the forum to share ideas and solutions.
I am looking forward to seeing all of you in Sandestin in July. We promise to have a very informative meeting that you won’t want to miss.
